Preconditioning of Linear Least Squares by Rif for Implicitly Held Normal Equations

چکیده
The efficient solution of the normal equations corresponding to a large sparse linear least squares problem can be extremely challenging. Robust incomplete factorization (RIF) preconditioners represent one approach that has the important feature of computing an incomplete LLT factorization of the normal equations matrix without having to form the normal matrix itself. The right-looking implementation of Benzi and Tůma has been used in a number of studies but experience has shown that in some cases it can be computationally slow and its memory requirements are not known a priori. Here a new left-looking variant is presented that employs a symbolic preprocessing step to replace the potentially expensive searching through entries of the normal matrix. This involves a directed acyclic graph (DAG) that is computed as the computation proceeds. An inexpensive but effective pruning algorithm is proposed to limit the number of edges in the DAG. Problems arising from practical applications are used to compare the performance of the right-looking approach with a left-looking implementation that computes the normal matrix explicitly and our new implicit DAG-based left-looking variant.

A Multilevel Block Incomplete Cholesky Preconditioner for Solving Rectangular Sparse Matrices from Linear Least Squares Problems
An incomplete factorization method for preconditioning symmetric positive definite matrices is introduced to solve normal equations. The normal equations are formed as a means to solve rectangular matrices from linear least squares problems. The procedure is based on a block incomplete Cholesky factorization and a multilevel recursive strategy with an approximate Schur complement matrix formed ...
متن کاملPositive solution of non-square fully Fuzzy linear system of equation in general form using least square method
In this paper, we propose the least-squares method for computing the positive solution of a $mtimes n$ fully fuzzy linear system (FFLS) of equations, where $m > n$, based on Kaffman's arithmetic operations on fuzzy numbers that introduced in [18]. First, we consider all elements of coefficient matrix are non-negative or non-positive. Also, we obtain 1-cut of the fuzzy number vector solution of ...

New preconditioning strategies for solving m × n overdetermined large and sparse linear least squares problems using the CGLS method are described. First, direct preconditioning of the normal equations by the Balanced Incomplete Factorization (BIF) for symmetric and positive definite matrices is studied and a new breakdown-free strategy is proposed. Preconditioning based on the incomplete LU fa...
متن کاملSolution of Toeplitz Normal Equations by Sine Transform Based Preconditioning
The normal equations constructed by a Toeplitz matrix are studied, in order to nd a suitable preconditioner related to the discrete sine transform. New results are given about the structure of the product of two Toeplitz matrices, which allow the CGN method to achieve a superlinear rate of convergence. This preconditioner outperforms the circulant one for the iterative solution of Toeplitz leas...
